Artist Inspiration

There's a few artists that have linked into my work. Starting with Nikki S.Lee, I learnt about her in my CHC lecture, She basically explores the idea of social groups, taking on the different roles in each subculture and living as this for a period of time , before taking a photograph etc. This appeals to me as it just proves my whole point about how different people react to these social norms and cultures, categories that we are spilt into to live, abide by. Everything about our environment is man made and built accordingly to the social structures and subcultures world wide.

Mona Hatoum – I discovered her in my first tutorial. Her sculptures like ‘cage a deux’ really appealed to me.

“Since the beginning of the 1990s, however, her work moved increasingly towards large-scale installations that aimed to engage the viewer in conflicting emotions of desire and revulsion, fear and fascination. In her singular sculptures, Hatoum has transformed familiar, every-day, domestic objects such as chairs, cots and kitchen utensils into things foreign, threatening and dangerous.”
This is exactly what I want to achieve in my work.
Dan Graham – Yet another name that popped up at my first tutorial, the bases behind his work aren't exactly to what I want to achieve, yet he produces fantastic sculptures.

“The pavilions use space and double-sided mirror to draw in the visitor, the relationship between visitor and artwork being the focus of Graham’s overall artistic project.”
He displays his work out side in public places, so the audience can interact with them ate ease , this is what I wish to do.

Further Artists

Katy Dawkins - After speaking with Steve, this artist really appealed to me.
If I was to tweak my work slightly and look more into the signs that control us, for example "non smoking" signs; she would be great to look into. If anything im dissopionted that i cant look more into her.

Francis Alys

Another artist that appealed to me,was Francis Alys.
Yet again, he does not link with my work fully.
He uses more of a performance art technique, in which he will do allaborit things in public, to see the audiances reactions.
This would of been a fantastic artist to look further into if i chose the performance route, in social areas; for example my previous experiment with Chris.
